Managing School Avoidance

Being an Involved Parent

Eleven Tips

Being an Involved Parent
The following are 9 ways
to become more active in your child's education.

  1. Maintain relationships between parents, teachers, and staff. Provide your input in an organized way by becoming involved in the Parent-teacher Association (PTA) or Parent-teacher Organization (PTO).

  2. Volunteer in your child's classroom.

  3. Help in preparing and serving meals or refreshments for special events.

  4. Volunteer to serve as a parent chaperone on school fieldtrips. Without the assistance of parents many school outings would not be possible.

  5. Attend school events of which your child is a part. Ensure that someone is available to support and encourage your child. If you are not able to be present personally, make arrangements for a family member or close friend to attend.

  6. Give input to policy-making councils. Become active with the school board or other administrative councils.

  7. Lobby for the interests of all children.

  8. Keep your relationship with the school productive by showing respect for teachers and staff. You share many common goals for the education of your children with teachers and administrative staff. Facilitate your child's learning by supporting the staff in their work.

  9. Get involved in some capacity at least once per year
