RECRUITING VOLUNTEERS

Parents. Parents are usually enthusiastic about volunteering for Lice Busters Programs, as they do not want their children or anyone else's children to have lice.

Interns.
Student interns from UCSC can help run your lice busters program. Contact Mike Rotkin at the community studies department at 459-4601 (openup@cats.ucsc.edu) or Elizabeth Dilkes at the psychology field study program at 459-4410 (edilkes@cats.ucsc.edu.)

Websites.
A special kit for PTA groups to help them organize a lice elimination program is available at: http://www.liceangels.com/downloads.htm (in the Educational Downloads Sections of their website).

RAISING MONEY  Service clubs. Your local community service clubs may help with donations. These include Rotary, Lions, Shriners, PTA, Soroptimists, etc. In addition to donations, community service clubs may be able to provide other forms of assistance. For example, the Salinas Steinbeck Rotary Club in District 5240 has a program called “Stop Lice Plus.” The program is available to other Rotary Clubs and community service agencies around the country. If you want to get your local Rotary Club or other service clubs to start their own “Stop Lice Plus,” contact Steve Steigman for more information at steves@redshift.com.

Grant proposals. Lice Angels at http://www.liceangels.com/downloads.htm has an excellent sample grant proposal. It is designed for use by educational or health organizations .

Other assistance.
Your local Chamber of Commerce may help find businesses who would make a donation. Local community service clubs may help with donations.

TAKING ACTION.  It is important that all school personnel in contact with children understand and know how to deal with the issue of lice. In our Lice Busters packet, we have provided booklets for parents about lice treatment and prevention. Because there is much conflicting information about lice, most agencies in the county will be distributing the same materials and advocating for the same treatments.
